Wednesday 26th, Thursday 27th and Friday 28th September, 2001
9.00 am - 1.00 pm, Innovations Building, Eggleston Road, ANU
This course will be of
interest to policy makers and policy analysts who wish to learn more about the
usefulness and analysis of panel data. Availability of panel data from around
the world and the recent investments in Australia towards gathering high-quality
panel data make this course particularly relevant.
The main focus will be on the usefulness of panel data for addressing questions
of economic and social behaviour which are not easily answered using data from
only one point in time. The longitudinal nature of panel data allows for the
use of simple techniques to solve otherwise intractable problems. We will begin
with a review of some of the more important panel data used for economic analysis
in North America and Europe and the analytical insights that have arisen from
these data sets. The course will specifically examine the types of questions
that can and can not be addressed using panel data. Basic econometric techniques
for the analysis of panel data will be introduced. In particular, techniques
for analyzing independent cross-sections at different points in time, two-period
panel data sets, and multi-period panel data sets will be introduced and discussed.
We will also discuss the application of panel data analysis to other types of
data structures.
Participants should be comfortable with basic statistical concepts such as means, variances, and covariances. Basic econometric modelling and estimation will be reviewed. While knowledge of these topics is not required, participants with some familiarity with these areas are particularly encouraged to attend.
Early registration is advised
as seminar places are limited - the cost is $475.
Places will be allocated according to date of receipt of application.
