The CEPR began in the Research School of Social Sciences at the ANU in 1980, and was the initiative of the late Professor Fred Gruen. It was motivated by his view that there was a major gap in Australian universities with respect to research and education in the area of economic policy. This view has turned out to be correct, given that the CEPR was the first institution of its kind in Australia, and there are now around a dozen institutions with a similar mandate.
